They (parents) want life to unfold according to what they believe. Most people want that. The last thing they want and need, is somebody (let alone their own child) telling them that their beliefs about life are bullshit / full of holes/ severely flawed.

This is a quote from an adolescent who is trying to explain how his parents have reacted to the fact that he smokes marijuana. The reason that this person expects his parents to react with anger or disappointment is because, he believes that his parents want life to unfold according to what they believe, and they are likely to react violently to any suggestion that their views are flawed. The trouble with this view is that it is completely flawed. Most people are not looking for their beliefs about life to be anything other than bullshit / full of holes / severely flawed.

Instead, they are looking for good advice on how to live better lives. Parents, by definition, know what they are doing wrong. They want their children to be better people than themselves, and can benefit greatly from advice on how they can improve.
